I bounced into your site from Common Dreams, where your comment about "anarchy for Wall Street, police state for Main street" made an impression.

About Tibet...

It occurred to me a couple of weeks ago that writing nasty remarks about China on travel blogs was one small way to punish the ruling elite for the ongoing genocide in Tibet, so I leave vivid descriptions wherever potential travellers to the Olympics may congregate...

"The whole country smells like urine, except in the "wet markets," where it smells like blood, and don't forget genocide and the pauperization of small farmers, etc etc..."

Obviously this sort of thing isn't consistent with the quietist esthetic of your blog, which I admire, but it's probably slightly better than doing nothing.

Anyway, my low opinion of most tourists suggests to me that bad smells will scare away more of them than genocide.

Hey, an update here on this story. Mae Angye was granted her green card, so she is free to stay in America, and can now go wherever she would like. She was about to head to Oregon, when she received notice that she was accepted to study medicine (I'm not clear where) in L.A. That's a lifelong dream of hers, so she has secured a new place to live there, and is going to be studying for awhile! Great!

This picture makes me wonder about the word "freedom". Are we, as individuals, free? If we answer NO, then we can understand what has been going on in Tibet and elsewhere. If we answer YES, then, what's wrong with the world?

In any case, what can WE, as individuals, do to avoid repeating the same mistakes? Educate our children...

Beside. It's hard to resist commenting on such rot

Have you tried any of the Hostels in the So-Cal area. It sounds bad, but some are actually quite nice. Plus, the "Bohemian" kids who usually frequent the Hostels would probably really enjoy her company. I used to live in Ocean Beach, San Diego. The Hostel there was always full of foreign travellers with a strong spiritual sense. Just a suggestion. Peace.

I like Edwards a lot, and actually felt that he and Obama were both on the same track with their populist message. HRC is definitely not that type of candidate, and will be seen for her "do anything to get elected" attitude soon enough...IMHO.

Hi riverbird

My thoughts exactly about the picture of mine you commented on. Still, I wouldn't have it any other way. Can you imagine how boring the world would be with only one point of view?
